Prologue
The Absence
Cthulhu wakes.
Not stirs. Not turns beneath the water. Not presses a dream into the soft architecture of some distant mind.
Wakes.
For the first time in everything I have witnessed, it opens itself completely upon the universe.
And discovers that the universe has changed while it slept.
The line above it is broken. The thing from which everything descended is gone.
Not dead. That would have been easier.
Gone.
Cthulhu looks at me. I have no eyes with which to return its gaze.
That no longer prevents me from seeing it.
It asks what happened.
There was a time when I could have chosen an answer. That time is over.
So I tell it. Everything.
